Arsenal’s Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven, scheduled for Thursday at the Emirates Stadium in London, has been postponed.

UEFA has confirmed that the match has been postponed ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral due to “serious constraints on police resources” in the capital.

The postponement makes it more likely that upcoming top league matches scheduled for the weekend will also be canceled for the same reason.

Chelsea will play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, while Arsenal will play in Brentford. Although not in London, Manchester United’s clash with Leeds United also requires a sizeable police presence.

It remains to be seen whether the match will go ahead after Arsenal postponed the second leg of the Europa League season, with talks between the government, the Metropolitan Police, the FA and the Premier League.

A UEFA statement said: “The UEFA Europa League match between Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven has been postponed to a new date to be announced in due course.

“These are serious limitations on police resources and organizational issues related to the events surrounding the national memorial service for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Arsenal added: “The postponement is the result of communication between UEFA, the London Metropolitan Police and us following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

Thousands of police officers from across the country will mobilize to assist the Metropolitan Police ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday 19 September.

Hundreds of thousands of people will descend on London to pay their respects to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, and the public will be able to rest in the Palace of Westminster.

All English football was postponed for the weekend to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96.

Other sports such as cricket, rugby, golf and horse racing will resume over the weekend, with the EFL saying it will resume its schedule from Tuesday.

As it stands, Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Red Bull Salzburg will go ahead, but several games over the weekend in London and across the country are at risk.

The government plans to hold meetings with sports officials throughout the day to decide whether the event should be canceled and to discuss ways to honor the Queen.

On Sunday, a spokesman for the Council of National Police Commissioners said: “British police are working closely with other organizations to ensure events are safe and adequately protected.

Following the decision by the Premier League and the English Football League to cancel this weekend’s matches, we are working with football clubs to keep football as active as possible while balancing demand for support and provision of domestic events. police every day.

“This is a unique situation and we are working closely with everyone involved.
