Manchester United legend Gary Neville disagrees with the Premier League’s decision to postpone this weekend’s match following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
While there have been no promises to cancel sporting events, the Premier League confirmed this morning that this weekend’s matches will not go ahead as planned out of respect.
“Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a meeting this morning.
“In honor and tribute to his extraordinary life and service to the country, this weekend’s Premier League matches, including Monday night’s match, have been postponed.”
The decision was not formal and Premier League bosses met this morning to discuss their options.
Due to the unique nature of the mid-season World Cup, which kicks off in Qatar in November, the league is facing unprecedented match disruption this season.
But it adds to the feeling that the upcoming match could be the perfect platform for supporters across the country to pay their respects to the Queen.
In response to Piers Morgan’s tweet saying the broadcaster should have the Olympics, Neville agreed.
“I agree with Pierre,” Neville wrote.
“There is nothing better than showing the respect a queen deserves.”
Next weekend’s matches are also unknown, and if the league decides to postpone the next round of matches, they will take place in the first week of October.
This could lead to more confusion in the Premier League, which has already been heavily criticized for its busy schedule for the 2022/23 season.
All EFL and grassroots matches have been postponed, with the exception of Premier League matches.
However, other sporting events such as the Great North Run should be held.
