Guatemala’s president on Tuesday in Taipei urged other governments to respect Taiwan’s sovereignty at a time when the Chinese Communist Party is stepping up efforts to isolate the island.
“I would like to call on the international community and the free world to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Taiwan,” Alejandro Giammattei said in a speech to the Taiwanese parliament as part of a four-day official visit to the territory. Guatemala’s leader said his country maintains a “strong friendship” with Taiwan.
Guatemala is one of a dwindling number of countries maintaining official relations with Taipei. Last month, Honduras severed ties with Taiwan in order to establish ties with Beijing.
