Parliament celebrates the Carnation Revolution after receiving Lula da Silva

The 49th anniversary of April 25 will be celebrated on Tuesday in the Parliament with a traditional ceremonial meeting after the welcoming ceremony of the President of Brazil, the final stage of his state visit to Portugal.

The solemn session on April 25 will begin at 11:30, contrary to usual, as at 10:00 there will be a welcoming ceremony for Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, who will conclude the state visit to Portugal that has begun. on Saturday.

The participation of the Brazilian head of state in the meeting of the Assembly of the Republic on the day of the Carnation Revolution was shrouded in controversy and earned sharp criticism from the Liberal Initiative and the Chega party, which announced a refusal demonstration in front of parliament.

In addition to this protest announced by Chega, three more concentrations are planned in places close to the Assembly of the Republic during the morning, according to the PSP, which will increase policing of various valences, including the intervention body.

After a welcoming session, which will be addressed by Lula da Silva and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Parliamentary Services will decorate the Assembly Room with traditional red carnations, and a flag will fly on the balcony of the São Bento Palace. Brazil will replace the presidential pavilion.

At 11:30 a.m., a solemn commemorative meeting is scheduled to begin on April 25 with speeches by the eight parties that have seats in parliament, in ascending order of representation: Livre, PAN, BE, PKP, IL, Chega, SDP and PS.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, will also deliver the final address, as usual, by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

This session will no longer be attended by Lula da Silva, who will travel to Madrid after the welcome ceremony with an agenda that includes meetings with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Filipe VI of Spain and even a business forum.

In the afternoon, from 15:30 to 18:00, Parliament will be open to the public, as well as the Prime Minister’s residence in São Bento, with the expectation that visitors will be able to “move directly” between the two spaces.

The gardens of the Palacete de São Bento will also host a program with a strong cultural focus from 2:30 pm, including dances, children’s shows, craft workshops or even concerts such as Ana’s fado concert. Moore.

At the same time, Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon hosts the usual popular parade organized by more than 40 civil society organizations, parties and trade unions, including Associação 25 de Abril, PCP, Bloco de Esquerda, PS, BE or even the central trade unions CGTP and UGT.

Unlike the last two years, when she organized her own initiative, the Liberal Initiative will also be part of this parade, according to an official Lusa party source.

In the afternoon, at 15:00, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza will take part in the Belen Palace in the swearing-in ceremony of the three new judges of the Constitutional Court, who replaced Joao Cowpers, Pedro Machete and Lino Ribeiro.
