Nine of the 15 people evicted from the building that partially collapsed on Rua 31 de Janeiro in Porto on Thursday cannot spend the next few nights, Habitação Hoje (HH)’s Romain Valentino told Lusa this Saturday.
“There is no solution for these people. No one has come up with anything. At the moment, nine people are on the street and do not know where they are going to spend the next few nights,” a representative of the organization said. which is trying to help Bangladeshi citizens displaced by the accident late on Thursday.
In this context, the Chamber of Porto and the Social Security Service are blamed for the situation by a member of the DG: “A statement has been made that the decision will be (…) but from the conversation we had yesterday [sexta-feira] with Social Security, we realized that this will take time, and it can be said that for these people there is no solution.”
As a result of the partial collapse of a three-story house, 15 people were left homeless, the remaining six “three live in a boarding house in Bonfime, and the rest, a family with a two-year-old child, live with a friend,” Romain said. , emphasizing, not knowing if the “situation” remains because “has no contact with them.”
According to him, nine people who were not provided with accommodation “spent their last night in a boarding house in Matosinhos.”
“There was a rather surreal message from the city council, speaking on behalf of Social Security (SS), saying that Social Security is evaluating a permanent solution, which, in addition to being false, is also very offensive to the SS, which never said so,” the leader of the organization criticized.
And he continued: “The SS states that autarchy is responsible for decisions that are not emergencies, one night, a situation confirmed by Rui Moreira, who said that this should be done by SAAS. [Serviço de Atendimento e Acompanhamento Social] and that he did not receive the request, which, again, is false.”
Romain Valentino, in support of the accusation against the mayor of Porto, reported on “His Highness’s efforts” on Friday afternoon to escort the residents “when they were directed by the SS to the National Center for the Support of the Integration of Migrants (CNAIM), where they were told that all what they can do is announce the situation to the Social Action of the Chamber of Porto and wait for a response.”
“Which he did, first by phone and then by SAAS request via ’email’, leaving us to wait for a response. It was yesterday [sexta-feira) e o ’email’ deve ter sido mandado, o mais tardar, às 15h00″, descreveu o responsável, acrescentando que “quase na hora do fecho do CNAIM, a funcionária disse-nos ter recebido resposta por telefone da Ação Social a dizer que não há solução”.
A mesma pessoa, continuou Romain, explicou-lhes então “que o único recurso possível era a linha de emergência [Linha Nacional de Emergência Nacional]”, a situation that “was immediately activated and led to the decision of last night in Matosinhos”.
“People who were left in the middle of all this were completely abandoned and had no contact with anyone, not with the state, not with the chamber. No one tried to call or approach and ask if they have support, anything, ”he complained.
In response to Lusa, the council claims that “SAAS Porto did not receive any signals or requests to intervene” and that “as far as it was possible to determine that the resettlement was guaranteed between CNAIM and the Social Security Service until Tuesday, when it will be reassessed by these organizations and will act respectively”.
