Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that he would fight to the death if the Russians invaded his headquarters in Kyiv at the start of the war, he said in an interview with 1+1 TV channel.
“I can shoot. Can you imagine (a headline like) ‘President of Ukraine taken prisoner by the Russians’? It’s a shame. I think that would be a shame,” he said, citing Reuters.
In the first days after the invasion, on February 24, 2022, the Ukrainian authorities claimed that Russian intelligence units tried to infiltrate Kiev, but were defeated and could not reach Bankova Street, in the center where the president’s offices are located. Other Russian units launched an attack on the outskirts of Kyiv, but could not advance. The authorities also recorded several failed sabotage attempts inside the city.
“I think if they went into administration, we wouldn’t be here,” Zelensky said. It is not clear which Russian units he had in mind. “No one would have been taken prisoner, because we had a very well-prepared defense on Bankova Street. We would be there until the end,” he said.
When asked if he had a gun and if he had trained, he replied that he did, but dismissed the suggestion that he could have used it to kill himself rather than being captured. “No no no. It’s not (to shoot) yourself. Definitely to fight back,” he said.
