The Diocese of Porto opens a Good Shepherd Seminar for those displaced from the collapsed building

The Diocese of Porto and the Social Security Service have agreed to house in Ermesinda until Tuesday nine people displaced from a building that collapsed Thursday at Rua 31 de Janeiro, Helena Souto of Habitação Hoje (HH) told Luza this Sunday.

Nine Bangladeshi citizens will be able to spend the night at the Good Shepherd Seminary, according to a spokesperson for HH.

A tentative decision was reached on Saturday early in the night, but Helena Souto said that given that the displaced “have no other resources than work, it is difficult for some to stay overnight at the seminar.”

“Some of them work until 02:00, they cannot enter the seminar until midnight, as provided for by the charter of the institution,” explained the person in charge of the organization.

As a result of the collapse of a three-story house, 15 people were left homeless, three of whom, according to the Social Security Service, live in a boarding house in Bonfim until Tuesday, and three more – a family with a two-year-old child – live with friends.

“This family, if they so wish, can spend the night in the seminary, the problem is that there are only nine vacancies,” Helena Souto explained.
