The general secretary of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP) this Monday defended an immediate 10% wage increase with a minimum of €100 retroactive to January, stressing that the measure is a central issue.
“National wages are moving further and further away from the average wage in the European Union, we are in favor of an immediate 10% increase of at least 100 euros effective from January and an immediate intermediate increase for all those who do not have an increase or in this case. does not meet the needs,” said Isabelle Camarinha in a speech she delivered on Monday at the Alameda May 1 celebration in Lisbon.
Emphasizing that “one in ten Portuguese is in distress”, the union leader said that “wages really should increase” to 850 euros, and gave arguments for those who believe that this is not possible.
“For those who tell us that this is not possible for one reason or another, we remember the consequences that the economic recovery, albeit limited, and the rights between 2015 and 2019 had, and we compare it with previous years of the PSD / CDS and the troika , the economy endures, yes, and is even grateful, because it is the purchasing power of wages and pensions that develops the economy,” said the CGTP leader.
