The Iranian national team decided this Monday before the start of the game against England in the 2022 World Cup not to sing the country’s anthem in clear support for the Iranian demonstrators who have been protesting against the regime in the past two months.
The starting 11 players remained silent as the anthem was played at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar.
After the death of Masha Amini, a young woman killed by Iranian authorities for wearing the Islamic hijab on September 16, protests erupted in several cities across the country. More than two months later, there is no end in sight to the protests, one of the biggest challenges the country’s leadership has faced since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
