Queen Elizabeth has been involved in some of the most famous moments in British sporting history.
Her greatest sporting passion over the years was horse racing, and Her Majesty viewed from the Royal Box many of Britain’s holiest sporting venues, including Wembley, Wimbledon and Rhodes.

World Cup Final, 1966
At Wembley, the Queen witnessed Bobby Moore’s finest moment in English football in the 1966 World Cup against West Germany.
A memorable sight of the day was the sight of the captain desperately trying to clean his hands before meeting Her Majesty in fresh white gloves to present the Jules Rimet trophy.
Wimbledon 2010
While Prince William and Kate Middleton are frequent visitors to SW19, the Queen has visited Wimbledon four times in recent years. Her last visit was in June 2010, when Andy Murray beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen for the first time in 33 years to advance to the third round.
“I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all the players, maybe all of us,” Murray said of meeting the Queen.
The Queen’s previous visits to Wimbledon were in 1957, 1962 and 1977.

Euro 1996
Football didn’t come home that summer, but the Queen was back at Wembley when Germany met the Czech Republic in the Euro 96 final.
After meeting Jürgen Klinsmann and others. Before the match, he handed over the trophy after Germany won 2-1.
Ashes, 2013
In 2013, the Queen visited the capital’s Lord’s Cricket Ground for the second Ashes Test between England and Australia.
Both teams went to the Lord’s Pavilion to meet him. He was first introduced to the players by Australia captain Michael Clark and then by England’s Alastair Cook.
Major League Baseball, 1991
Most of her iconic sporting appearances have been in the UK, but the Queen has also appeared on official visits around the world.
During a visit to the United States in 1991, George W. Bush treated the Queen and Prince Philip to some great American fun as the Orioles hosted the Oakland Athletics in a Major League Baseball game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.
They were in state watching Maryland beat North Carolina in their first and only college football game 34 years ago.
2012 Olympics
The Queen played a memorable role in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in the capital.
Her Majesty appeared in a short James Bond sketch opposite Daniel Craig and played a speaking role when 007 parachuted her from Buckingham Palace to the Olympic Stadium.
Speeches to world leaders formally opened the convention soon after.
Royal Ascot, 2021
The queen was well known for her passion for horse racing that was passed down from generation to generation.
A racehorse fan and owner, he has been a patron of Royal Ascot since he ascended the throne in 1952 and has virtually always attended the event over the years.
Nobody was able to attend due to the 2020 Covid lockdown, but Her Majesty returned for the final day of action, much to the delight of race fans as normal services resumed in June.
