Remco Evenepoul (Soudal) has dropped out of the Giro d’Italia after testing positive for Covid-19. The announcement came hours after winning the Stage 9 time trial and leading the race.
The 23-year-old Belgian won time in all competitions, including Portugal’s Joao Almeida (UAE), who was ninth, dropping to fifth place overall (the official classification will only be revised this Monday, with the Portuguese moving to fourth place). Thus, one of the main candidates drops out of the fight for the final victory. Briton Geraint Thomas (INEOS) becomes the new leader.
Joao Almeida finished in the top 10 on the stage. “I felt good. It was difficult to find a good rhythm, because of the turns I had to take risks. It was good, despite some fear due to the slippery surface,” said the cyclist, who, in addition to giving way to his main rivals, lost his helmet visor during the “chrono”. This Monday, the peloton is enjoying its first day of rest.
