Portuguese animation wins top honor at Quirino Awards

The feature film Nayola and the shorts O Homem do Lixo, The Ice Dealers and Garrano were the winners in the main categories of the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation, which was screened over the weekend in Tenerife, Canary Islands (Spain). . José Miguel Ribeiro’s Nayola won Portugal the Best Animated Feature Film award, while Laura Gonçalves’ O Homem do Lixo won the Best Short Film award.

The short film The Ice Traders, with which Portuguese director João González competed for this year’s Oscar, won the award for the best visual development of an Ibero-American animated work. Finally, the short film “Garrano”, directed by David Doutel and Vasco Sa, won the award for best sound design and original music for an Ibero-American animation work. The Quirino Awards – nine in all – were established in 2018 to recognize the work of those working in animation cinema in the Ibero-American space.
