PS councilor in the Braga ward, Ricardo Sousa, denounced today that “most schools” in the municipality do not allow students to shower at the end of PE classes, deeming it “extremely important” to change the practice.
Speaking at a weekly executive meeting led by the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM/Aliança coalition, Ricardo Souza warned that for many children, a bath at school may be the only thing they take all week.
“In most schools, swimming is banned,” he said, wondering if it was a financial matter or a learning option.
Bathhouses were banned during the covid-19 pandemic, he said, but there are “still a lot of omissions” from schools at the moment.
“Bathing is a very important issue. We think that for many children weekly bathing can be done in schools,” he warned.
In response, education adviser Carla Sepúlveda said she was unaware of the situation, stressing that “there are no rules” against bathing.
“I’ll find out,” the mayor said.
