The elections were originally scheduled for February 2025. Early elections could impact Spain’s national politics as Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez depends on separatist parties to approve legislation.
The general secretary of the Juntas for Catalonia party, Jordi Turull, has nominated Carles Puigdemont, who is running in Belgium, as his candidate.
