The elections were originally scheduled for February 2025. Early elections could impact Spain’s national politics as Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez depends on separatist parties to approve legislation.
The general secretary of the Juntas for Catalonia party, Jordi Turull, has nominated Carles Puigdemont, who is running in Belgium, as his candidate.
“The person we all have in mind could be in Catalonia on the day of the investment debate,” he said of the politician accused in Spain of embezzlement (for using public funds to organize an illegal referendum on Catalan independence in 2017) and disobedience .
