More than 21,000 illegal immigrants detained in Saudi Arabia in one week

Saudi authorities arrested 21,505 people in one week for violating residency rules, labor laws and illegally crossing borders, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on April 6.

According to the official report, a total of 14,323 people were arrested for violations of residency laws, while 4,778 people were detained for attempting to cross the border illegally and another 2,404 people were detained for work-related matters.

The report found that among the 1,295 people arrested for attempting to enter the Kingdom illegally, 61% were Ethiopians, 37% were Yemenis and 2% were of other nationalities.

Another 61 people were caught trying to cross to neighboring countries and nine were arrested for their participation in transporting and harboring offenders.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said anyone found facilitating illegal entry into the Kingdom, including by providing transportation and shelter, could face up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $260,000, and confiscation of vehicles and property.
