At least three people were killed and 40 were missing after a boat carrying about 80 Haitians trying to flee to the Turks and Caicos Islands caught fire on Friday, the Haitian government said.
The ship caught fire off the coast of Haiti, and the number of victims has not yet been determined, as also reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“The ship, which had about 80 people on board, left Labadi. [norte do Haiti] “in the direction of the Turks and Caicos Islands” before catching fire off the coast, the UN agency said, condemning the tragedy that illustrates the despair in which the people of Haiti, a poor Caribbean country, are plunged into a multidimensional crisis.
