Boxer who worked on construction sites in Portugal wins bronze in the 51 kg weight category for Cape Verde

This Sunday, boxer David de Pina won a bronze medal in the 51 kg weight category at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, for the first time in the history of Cape Verde, after losing in the semi-finals of the boxing competition to Uzbek Hasanboy Dusmatov.

The 27-year-old boxer from Santa Cruz has already won Cape Verde’s first Olympic medal, reaching the semi-finals after beating Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba, but a unanimous points decision loss to Dusmatov earns him bronze.

Cape Verde’s flag bearer at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony will receive a third medal from Portuguese-speaking Africa after two “metals” from Mozambican Maria Mutola, champion in the 800m in Sydney 2000 and bronze in Atlanta 1996.
