310 people killed in road accidents in Mozambique in six months

According to a report from the Ministry of Transport and Communications seen by Lusa on Friday, 310 people died in road accidents in Mozambique in the first half of this year, down 13% from the same period in 2023.

According to the report, there were 387 road accidents in the first half of 2023, resulting in 357 deaths, while 366 accidents were recorded in the first six months of this year, which is 5% less than last year.

Pedestrian collisions “still rank first, accounting for 36% of total recorded accidents,” followed by skidding (29%), the report added, while collisions between cars and motorcycles are “a new phenomenon emerging among the causes of pedestrian accidents, accounting for about 14%,” due to “the increased use of motorcycles as a means of transport in some cities and towns in the country.”
