Berlin-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Transparency International has condemned the arrest warrant issued by Russian authorities for its director Ilya Shumanov, who has been on the list of foreign agents since October 2022.
“The attack on Shumanov is part of a broader strategy to intimidate and dismantle organizations that challenge corruption and promote transparency,” the NGO said in a statement, recalling the case of opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who died in custody in the Yamalo-Nenets region of the Arctic.
NGO President François Valerian called on the international community to “unequivocally” condemn Russia’s actions and “defend the rights of those who fight for justice and good governance.”
