On Thursday, Russia fined WhatsApp 3 million Russian rubles (about 34,626 euros) for failing to remove content banned in the country. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, which have already been banned in the country, the messaging platform has not yet been fined by Russia for not removing banned content.
WhatsApp has been fined by the Russians in the past for allegedly refusing to comply with Russian data protection law, thereby keeping Russian users’ data on servers in the country.
The Russian news agency RIA, cited by Reuters, reports that the sanction applied by Russia to WhatsApp is related to the failure to remove information about the drug Lyrica, the sale and production of which is prohibited in this country.
