The US Treasury Secretary said this Friday in Beijing that China’s secession is “impossible” despite trade tensions between the world’s two biggest powers.
“The decoupling of the world’s two largest economies would be destabilizing to the global economy,” Janet Yellen told US business leaders.
These statements come at a time when some US politicians have been urging Washington for months to reduce its dependence on the Asian giant in the context of growing geopolitical tensions.
Yellen’s visit comes just weeks after Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit in President Joe Biden’s administration’s attempt to resume physical contact with Beijing after three years of near-total isolation from China due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Janet Yellen, whose trip to China will be her first since taking office in 2021, is expected to hold talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who is specifically in charge of economic affairs in China.
