Cyclist Leangel Linares (Tavfer-Mortagua) won stage 1 of the 84 Tour of Portugal by beating Czech Daniel Babor (Kaja Selskaya) in the sprint in Ourem – the first time the city has hosted the end of a “Grandissima”. .
The first stage was busy from the first kilometer when a break of the day formed with five cyclists. After riding together for several kilometers, the group split up and cyclists Diogo Narciso and Joao Macedo (Credibom-LA Aluminios) decided to be the protagonists and moved forward. Diogo Narciso led the first flying goal in Vila Nova de Puares, while his partner João Macedo led the first in two flying goals in Ferreira do Zezere and Tomar. 20 km before the finish line, they were picked up one by one. In the last mountain prize at Fatima, César Fonte (Rádio Popular-Boavista) avoided the peloton but was caught 5km from the end, so the race ended in a sprint. Rafael Reis (Glassdrive) kept the yellow jersey with the same time as yesterday’s winner Leangel Linares for two reasons: he won hundredths of a second of the prologue in Viseu and because he “earned” two extra seconds on flying targets yesterday.
