A Santarém court ordered the house arrest of an arson suspect in the municipality of Ourem last Sunday, but he is awaiting preventive detention for the installation of an electronic bracelet, a police source told Lusa this Friday.
The Leiria Judicial Police arrested a man suspected of arson in the municipality of Ourem, Santarém district on August 6, who had already been convicted of the Karangeheira fire, in Leiria, in 2017 and 2018.
Present at the first court hearing this afternoon, the Santarém court ruled that the man would be held until he was fitted with an electronic bracelet, a Judicial Police (PJ) source said.
According to a statement released this Friday, the SP said a 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the crime and is suspected of being “responsible for the forest fire that took place on Sunday, which, according to the Institute for the Conservation of Nature da Natureza e das Florestas, destroyed about 250 hectares of forest and exposed the parishes northwest of the municipality of Ouren to endangered populations.
The suspect has a “conviction for crimes of the same nature that occurred in the Karangeheira area in 2017 and 2018” and was sentenced to community service at the time, according to the SP source.
The same source said that a man working “odd jobs in the construction industry” made the first attempt to start a fire with a direct flame using a lighter, but was unsuccessful.
He then searched for many remnants, where he succeeded in his intentions, “causing great damage to the wooded area and endangering several houses.”
A PJ source also said the suspect’s motives were “useless”. “I love the spectacle that the event presents and the way the firefighters fight,” he added.
