The third SEF inspector, convicted for the death of Igor Gomenyuk, was transferred to Evora prison

Duarte Laya, the third SEF inspector convicted of the death of emigrant Igor Gomenyuk, surrendered this Thursday in an Évora prison.

On Monday morning, only two of the three convicted inspectors turned themselves in to serve out the remainder of their nine-year prison sentence.

Duarte Laja later asked to surrender for health reasons, he said at the time. lawyer Ricardo Serrano Vieira.

Duarte Laja and Luis Silva were initially sentenced to nine years in prison, while Bruno Sousa was sentenced to seven. They appealed to the Lisbon Court of Appeal, which ruled that they would all be sentenced to the same nine-year prison term. Appeals to the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court followed, with no effect.

According to the decision of the Lisbon Criminal Court, Igor died of slow asphyxiation after an unspecified number of kicks and canes, in which the Ukrainian broke eight ribs. He was also left lying on his stomach with handcuffs on his hands, which could cause a cardiac arrest. When Igor was found, it was already too late. The crime took place in a room with no video surveillance at the Temporary Accommodation Center at Humberto Delgado Airport.

Igor’s widow received compensation from the state in the amount of 800 thousand euros. However, he is now asking for global compensation of 700,000 euros in a new criminal case. Oksana is demanding 200,000 euros from the security company Prestibel, another 200,000 euros from former director of the border guard Antonio Sergio Enrique, another 100,000 euros from each of the two inspectors who were not convicted, and 50,000 euros from each of the guards against whom charged: Paulo Marcelo and Manuel Correia.
