A French family, consisting of a couple and their 5-year-old daughter, was rescued Saturday evening from a drifting sailboat with a broken mast 605 miles (1,120 kilometers) northeast of Saint Michael. .
The crew was struck by a storm northeast of Cape Finisterre in Spain, “with winds of 50 knots and waves of 6 to 7 meters,” the Navy said.
The Air Force rescue operation was coordinated by the Navy. The ship headed to this place at the same time that a Portuguese Air Force aircraft was called.
At the scene, authorities found the sailboat adrift with a broken mast. Three crew members were taken to Francisco Sa Carneiro airport.
