Porto: 70 incidents and a family of five moved

In the city of Porto, 70 incidents were recorded this Wednesday due to bad weather, late in the day and at night, with a family of five having to be relocated, the local council said.

A family of five, a couple with three children, from the Fontanhas area of the parish of Bonfim was relocated due to the lack of living conditions in their house, a situation caused by bad weather, explained the mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, speaking to journalists.

“This family is already on the way or is already in the Seminário de Vilar, where they will have three rooms with all amenities,” emphasized Rui Moreira.

The mayor recalled that the situation repeats itself on days of heavy rain, and added that the Porto City Council is trying to “acquire these lands in order to create reservoirs and resettle the people who live there.”

Sapadores do Porto fire brigade commander Carlos Marques said that until 23:00 this Wednesday there had been 70 “relatively minor” incidents due to bad weather, with intrusions, floods, two fallen trees and falling structures, but no casualties.”

“A very high peak of precipitation was recorded between 18:00 and 20:00, a large number of falls: 40 in two hours,” he said.

Rui Moreira noted an “absolutely abnormal amount of rainfall”: 20 liters of water per square meter fell in the areas of Campo 24 de Agosto and Fontañas.

“We have two tunnels closed, including the Campo Alegre tunnel. The biggest problems we had were in Bonfima, the Fontañas area, Costa Cabral, Foco, Cristo Rey, Maréchal Saldanha, but mainly with the basements, because the city cannot drain these tunnels. amount of water,” he emphasized.

When asked about the expectation of bad weather scenarios, Rui Moreira stressed that these meteorological phenomena are very fast and unpredictable, recalling that the authorities have decided to speed up the closure of Avenida Gustavo Eiffel.

Porto is under an orange warning due to rain forecast until 00:00 Thursday. An orange warning returns to the area from 6am to 6pm on Thursday.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said Depression Aline “will cross the Atlantic in a digging phase, approaching the central west coast of Portugal on the morning of the 19th, rapidly moving eastward and carrying a mass of very hot, humid and unstable air.”

The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) this Wednesday advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday due to the forecast of rain and strong winds resulting from the spread of the Aline depression across the continent.

ANEPC Second Commander Miguel Cruz said the device’s alert level will increase from yellow to orange, the second-highest, as of 12 a.m. Thursday.
