Vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Porto’s Avenida Gustavo Eiffel will be disrupted from 11pm as a “precautionary measure and to protect” people and goods due to forecasts of worsening weather conditions, it was announced this Friday.
In a publication on its official website, the Porto City Council stresses that a reassessment of the situation will be carried out on Sunday and warns that, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), persistent and sometimes heavy rainfall is expected, at least until Sunday.
“Traffic will be restored as soon as safety conditions are met, with a re-assessment of the situation on October 29, Sunday,” the municipality adds.
Porto will be under a yellow warning from 18:00 to 09:00 on Saturday, which will change to an orange warning until 00:00 on Sunday.
This Friday, the Civil Protection Service issued flood alerts due to the expected worsening of the weather situation over the weekend, with a particular focus on the north and center of the continent, warning that a preventive SMS message would also be sent to the population. warn them about the dangers of flooding and flooding.
On Thursday, also due to forecasts of bad weather, the Porto City Council also decided to interrupt vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Avenida D. Carlos I.
In a text published this Friday, the municipality asks the population to take “the necessary preventive and protective measures” as well as to “adopt appropriate behavior” that will minimize the existing risk, such as respecting the security perimeters that will be installed on Avenida Gustavo Eiffel.
The services also require compliance with the security perimeters already established along the coastline and access to marinas and beaches, namely Avenida de D. Carlos I, Avenida do Brasil and Avenida de Montevideo.
Citizens are asked to unblock rainwater drainage systems such as downspouts, gutters and downspouts and remove items that could be dragged or obstruct the free flow of water.
Adopting “defensive driving, reducing speed and taking extra care when water tables may form on roads or reduce visibility and avoid crossing flooded areas” is another Civil Defense requirement.
The municipality is also calling for “special attention” when driving, staying and parking near wooded areas due to the possibility of trees falling due to soil saturation.
The Chamber of Porto assures that it will continue to monitor the situation, “taking all necessary preventive and safety measures and issuing warnings that it deems necessary.”
