The fishing boat sank Monday evening about 12 miles south of Faial island, but the crew were rescued alive, Horta port captain told Lusa.
“The ship was partially submerged and four crew members were already on life rafts when they were picked up by another fishing vessel nearby,” Gomes Bras explained, adding that the men were then taken to the port of Horta.
The vessel, registered on the island of San Miguel, where the four crew members also came from, was called “Mestre Zangão” and was apparently surprised by the waves and strong winds felt in the area.
In addition to the fishing vessel Manuel de Arriaga, which rescued the crew, a lifeboat from the port of Horta and a Merlin EH101 helicopter from Lajes Air Base were also involved in search and rescue operations. .
