Taiwan elections are at a ‘critical’ stage in determining relations with China

Taiwan’s January presidential and parliamentary elections come at a “critical juncture” and the choice of Tsai Ing-wen’s successor will have “major implications” for relations between Taipei and China, which claims sovereignty over the island, Crisis Group said.

In an article published this Friday, the think tank highlights that the party of Tsai, Taiwan’s current president, is leading in polls in the January election, which is contested by three parties with different stances on relations between the autonomously-ruled island and China.

“Tensions over the island’s future are rising steadily as decades-old agreements that have maintained peace in the Taiwan Strait begin to crumble under the pressure of changing dynamics in Beijing, Washington and Taipei,” and negotiations have been suspended since 2016 given the refusal to cooperate with the Democratic presidential administration. Progressive Party (DPP), reports Crisis Group.
