Seven areas of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning, including on New Year’s Eve, due to forecasts of rough seas, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said this Friday.
The warnings apply to the areas of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon.
According to the IPMA, the yellow warning for these seven areas is in effect from 6am on Sunday the 31st until 3am on Monday, the first day of the year.
IPMA predicts the occurrence of waves from the northwest with a significant height of four to five meters.
Diving into the sea is a way for many Portuguese to celebrate the arrival of each new year, leading to attention from maritime authorities.
According to the institute, New Year’s Eve on the Portuguese mainland should be rainless, with rain returning to the northern and central regions in the first days of 2024.
