Train services on the Beira Baixa line between Fundão and Guarda were restored this Saturday after being interrupted on Thursday by a landslide, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) reported this Saturday.
“Infraestruturas de Portugal reports that after carrying out work and ensuring safety conditions, train traffic has been restored on the section of the Beira-Baixa line between Fundan and Tortosendo stations,” the agency said in a statement.
As a preventive measure, despite the restoration of traffic, the IP decided to limit the speed to 10 km/h when passing the place where the landslide occurred.
A landslide on Thursday afternoon interrupted traffic between Fundan and Tortosendo stations (Covilhã municipality) in the Castelo Branco region.
Due to the suspension of traffic between the two stations, Comboios de Portugal (CP) began providing road transport for passengers between Fundao and Guarda.
On Friday, IP said the current operation was “very complex” due to the large volume of earth that would have to be moved.
“On-site assessments indicate that the cause of this phenomenon will be soil saturation and water ingress into the road platform caused by heavy and prolonged rainfall, which caused landslides from the pavement adjacent to the bridge. The Beira Baixa line provides rail connections between Guarda and Lisbon.
