Pro-Taiwan independence candidate wins presidential election

According to local press reports, William Lai Ching-te, a pro-Taiwan independence candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (PDP), won the presidential election.

Estimates put Lai Ching-te (40%) ahead of Hou Yu-iha (33%), the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party candidate, by seven percentage points. Taiwan People’s Party candidate Ko Wen-je gets 26%.

The elections come at a time of tension with China. Beijing fears that Lai Ching-te’s victory will mean a step towards Taiwanese independence. The NDP, now in power, has traditionally been pro-independence.

The Kuomintang candidate, who advocates rapprochement with China, admitted defeat. “I respect the final decision of the Taiwanese people (…) Congratulations to Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-him [parceira de candidatura presidencial] in the elections, hoping that they will not disappoint the expectations of the Taiwanese people,” Hou Yu-ih said.
