The Colombian government said this Sunday that the presence of Colombian mercenaries in Ukraine is just the result of “personal decisions”, answering questions from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia would like to clarify with regard to the Colombian citizens who were victims of the war in Ukraine that their presence there is due to personal decisions and that there are no bilateral agreements,” the Colombian diplomatic statement said. . .
“In cases where these people have suffered, they and their families receive the necessary consular assistance. The Colombian government does not encourage or facilitate these types of activities,” the ministry added.
Last week, Lavrov referred to the problems caused by the use of mercenaries in various military conflicts in various parts of the world, especially in Ukraine, which has been the target of an invasion by forces commanded by Moscow since February 2022.
The head of Russian diplomacy condemned the use of mercenaries, accusing them of “only knowing how to carry out terrorist attacks.”
“When they complete their mission in one country, these are people who move to another place to commit even more violence,” Lavrov added, expressing hope that “Colombian leaders understand this very well, as do the leaders of other Latin American countries.” .” .
Several Colombian citizens came to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, and some of them died.
Recently, news emerged of the death of several former Colombian soldiers during clashes in Ukraine.
