The IPMA raised the sea warning to red for seven counties on Friday.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) on Friday upgraded the weather warning for seven areas of the continent to red due to the forecast of heavy seas, with waves from the northwest that could reach 14 metres.

According to the IPMA, the areas of Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto and Viana do Castelo will be on a yellow alert until 6pm this Thursday, before turning orange until 6pm on Friday and then red (most serious warning on Friday). scale of three) from 18:00 on Friday to 15:00 on Saturday.

These seven counties will then be under an orange warning from 3:00 pm Saturday until 12:00 am Sunday.

Due to rough seas, IPMA also placed the areas of Faro, Setúbal and Beja under a yellow warning level (from 0:00 to 9:00 on Friday), and then changed it to orange until 0:00 on Sunday.

According to the Portuguese Navy and the National Maritime Authority, the Caminha, Douro, Esposende, Vila Praia de Ancora, Póvoa do Varzim, Vila do Conde, Portinho da Ericeira and São Martinho do Porto spits closed to shipping due to sea conditions.

The Figueira da Foz bar is restricted and is only closed to boats under 35 meters in length.

The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo due to disturbances at sea from 12:00 Friday until 0:00 Sunday.

The areas of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco and Braga are under a yellow warning, but due to a forecast of snowfall of more than 800 meters with accumulation of more than 1,000 meters, until 6:00 am on Saturday.

An orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a moderate or high risk meteorological situation and a yellow warning is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

IPMA is forecasting spells of rain until at least the weekend, which could be heavy, with falling temperatures, rough seas and strong winds due to the passage of a cold frontal surface.

The IPMA statement said this weather change “is associated with the weakening of an anticyclone located to the west of the Iberian Peninsula, allowing the influence of a large region of depression centered in the Iceland region, a region with several cores, one of which is associated with a cold frontal surface that will affect the continent in the coming days.”

The institute says one of the cores of this depression region is the Louis Depression, named on Wednesday by Météo France (French Meteorological Service).

This depression mainly affects the northwestern region of France.
