This Friday, the Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party accused the former leader of the Social Democrats, Manuela Ferreira Leite, of disrespecting victims and health workers when she believed that Covid-19 was a blessing for socialist governments.
Pedro Nuno Santos spoke at the last rally of the campaign for the legislative elections after his head of the socialist list of Setubal, Ana Catarina Mendes, also condemned the statements this Friday of Manuela Ferreira Leite, who also considered that, like Covid -19, inflation was also “ “a blessing” for leader António Costa.
“Saying Covid-19 is a blessing is disrespectful to victims and healthcare workers. This is disrespectful to the National Health Service (SNS),” the Socialist leader said.
In this context, Pedro Nuno Santos mentioned women who, in his words, “led the great fight” against the pandemic.
“Women like Marta Temido, Mariana Vieira da Silva or Graça Freitas. Women who defended their people. How well they represented their people and the Portuguese government,” he said.
He then left one more question: “What are the benefits of inflation?” Pedro Nuno Santos noted that “interest rates rose, which hurt many Portuguese families, “and it was a very difficult period when the Portuguese were counting on government support.”
“When there is a crisis, we already know that they go towards salaries and pensions,” he said, criticizing AD.
At the pre-election dinner of the Democratic Alliance (AD) in Estufa Fria this Friday in Lisbon, marking International Women’s Day, Manuel Ferreira Leite said that the PS, which has ruled for the last eight years, “still had two advantages” or “two blessings that fell from sky”, the Covid-19 pandemic and inflation.
“Covid for this government was a blessing, it was an excuse to do nothing, it was an opportunity to help those who really needed support at this time – and that any government would certainly do this, an SDP government would do it too.” So,” he asserted.
More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called to vote on Sunday to elect 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.
18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are participating in the elections.
