Jair Bolsonaro’s lawyers denied this Wednesday to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that the former president’s two-day stay at the Hungarian embassy in Brasilia was related to a possible request for asylum in that country as a way to avoid justice.
Lawyers said Bolsonaro was at the embassy to maintain contacts with Hungarian authorities as part of the “intense international agenda” he supports as the former president of Brazil, mainly with government officials who share conservative ideas such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. And remember that Bolsonaro is only being investigated, not accused, in the cases he faces, and he is not wanted by the courts to which he appeared whenever he was summoned.
They also assured that, contrary to what is common in Brasilia, Bolsonaro did not take refuge in the embassy for fear of being arrested, because if the STF wanted to arrest him, they could do so when they detained his advisers or when Federal police searched his beach house and confiscated his passport four days before the embassy visit.
