Ademar Meireles, a candidate for councilor in Florianopolis, Brazil, for the Liberal Party led by former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, is emulating the image of Argentine President Javier Miley to boost his election campaign. According to the Brazilian press, the businessman’s name will be included on the ballot papers as “Miley de Floripa”.
Before the municipal elections campaign, Ademar Meireles, who is properly identified as Javier Milei, visited the Casa Rosada, the headquarters of the President of the Argentine Republic, gave an interview in Spanish to Argentine television channels and participated in a conference of conservative political action in Brazil.
“It all started as a joke, but it ended up winning the sympathy of many people, and I like it too,” the businessman said on social media.
The slogan of the candidate for councilor (“Viva La Liberdad”, Portuguese for “Long Live Freedom”) in Florianópolis refers to the ultra-liberal thinking of the Argentine president. And the campaign symbol, a chainsaw, is a reference to Miley’s “chainsaw plan” to cut public spending.
Argentina’s president, elected in December, has already called his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva a “thief,” “corrupt” and a “communist.” He invited former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to his inauguration instead of Lula.
Municipal elections in Brazil are scheduled for October.
