“I started singing as a joke, they liked my voice, and since there were no competitors left, they invited me as soon as I finished classes to go home. How will I tell my parents that I took a detour to take part in a music competition?”
That evening Nancy performed B. Leza’s warm song “Lua Testemunha”, won the tour, reached the finals and won: “The prize was recording an album, that’s where it all started.”
The requests to sing began and Nancy never stopped. He has recorded five albums and now returns with a new work, “Gente,” which defines what music should be, a point of meeting and exchange. “This is an album dedicated to all the people who have inspired and inspire me,” he says.
Among them, of course, is Francisco Xavier da Cruz, or B. Leza, an author and classical composer from Cape Verde, the patron of the morna. On the album, which includes fado, batuk, jazz, morna and pop, you can also find, among others, Mario Lucio and Vice Diaz (living treasures of Cape Verdean music), Olmo Marina (Basque Country), Luciano Maia, Gustavo Nunez and In production are Fred Martins (Brazil), Denis Stetsenko (Ukraine) or António Sambujo and Amelia Muge.
On the threshold of a 30-year career and always considered one of the heirs of Cesaria Évora, she says today without false modesty: “I feel very warm when my mission is to promote the music of Cape Verde.”
