The Palestinian Authority will seek full membership of the United Nations (UN) this month, Malta, the country that will preside over the Security Council in April, confirmed this Monday, adding that it has not yet received a letter confirming the official application.
“The Palestinians are expected to submit a letter outlining their request for the Security Council to consider full membership of the UN. It is my understanding that a letter will be sent to the President of the Security Council, the President of the General Assembly, as well as the Secretary General of the UN, and will describe the reasons why they believe that they meet all the criteria for full membership. (…) We hope that in the coming days, as soon as it is received, the Presidency will circulate this letter,” explained Malta’s representative to the UN, Vanessa Fraser.
An application for full membership had already been submitted in 2011, but remained pending as the Security Council was unable to reach consensus for a formal decision.
