The Brazilian Championship is suspended due to severe flooding in the south of the country

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on Wednesday that it would suspend the local championship due to the “unprecedented environmental tragedy” that has struck the south of the country, the organization said in a statement.

Rounds 7 and 8 of Serie A (First Division) have been postponed at the request of the 15 teams participating in the competition. Games in the corresponding rounds will take place over the next two weekends.

“The remaining competitions continue without changes to the schedule, with the exception of the games of Rio Grande do Sul clubs. [gentílico correspondente a Rio Grande do Sul] which are suspended until May 27,” the published note says.

The suspension of games for teams from Rio Grande do Sul (Grêmio, Internacional and Juventude), the state most affected by the floods, has already been announced. The latest pictures show that the Gremio stadium has turned into a real mud field.

There are five Portuguese coaches working in the main Brazilian championship. Abel Ferreira (Palmeiras), Pedro Caixinha (Bragantino), Antonio Oliveira (Corinthians), Arthur Jorge (Botafogo) and Petit (Cuiaba). Álvaro Pacheco, former coach of Vitória de Guimarães, will become the sixth when he officially joins Vasco da Gama.
