The average monthly gross salary per employee in the first quarter increased by 3.8%.

Average monthly gross wages per employee (per job) increased by 6.1%, to 1,443 euros, in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, but in real terms the increase was 3.8%, INE reported this Thursday .

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in March the average gross regular monthly salary, excluding wage components such as holiday and Christmas bonuses, which means it is less seasonal, was 1,285 euros, which is a nominal annual figure . growth by 6.1% and real (adjusted for inflation) by 3.8%.

The average monthly gross salary per employee was 1,138 euros and registered a nominal increase of 6.3% and a real increase of 4.0%.

These results cover 4.6 million jobs, corresponding to social security beneficiaries and Caixa Geral de Aposentações subscribers, an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

According to INE, compared to March 2023, average monthly gross wages increased across all dimensions of analysis (economic activity, company size, institutional sector, technological intensity and knowledge intensity).

The greatest growth was observed in the “extractive industries” (12.9%), in companies with 500 or more employees (6.9%), in the public sector (6.3%) and in “highly knowledge-intensive market services companies” (9 ,4%). ).

In March, average total wages per employee ranged from 902 euros in the fields of “agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry and fishing” to 3,237 euros in the fields of “electricity, gas, steam, hot and cold water and cold air.” “.

Regular remuneration and basic remuneration also had the lowest value in the activities of “agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry and fishing” (812 euros and 792 euros, respectively), and the highest in the activities of “electricity, gas, steam, hot gas” . and cold water and cold air” (2745 euros and 2520 euros).

Depending on the size of the company, the total remuneration ranged from €1,000 in companies with one to four employees to €1,716 in companies with 500 or more employees.

Analysis of the institutional sector shows that total, regular and basic remuneration of civil servants (PAs) increased in real and annualized terms by 4.0%, 4.1% and 4.3%, respectively.

In the private sector, real year-on-year growth was 3.9% overall, 3.9% in the regular sector and 4.1% in the basic sector.

According to an INE note, differences in average remuneration levels between the AP sector and the private sector “reflect, among other things, differences in the type of work performed, age composition (with implications for the accumulation of human capital and professional experience). ) and in the qualifications of the employees included in them.

“It appears that workers in the PA sector have on average a higher level of education: 55.6% of workers in this sector had a university degree (24.9% in the private sector), 26.8% had completed secondary or higher education (32.3% ). % in the private sector) and 17.6% had a level of education corresponding to a maximum of the 3rd cycle of basic education (42.7% in the private sector),” he states.
