Teachers will restore 6 years, 6 months and 23 days of work experience frozen during the “troika” over 2 years and 10 months, starting in September and ending in 2027.
The government’s proposal in the latest round of negotiations on Tuesday calls for 25% of the time to be returned in September and a further 25% in September 2025. In other words, in just one year half the time will be restored, allowing many teachers to advance their careers with earnings of between 200 and 300 euros gross. In September 2026, another 25% will be returned, and the final 25% will be returned in September 2027.
“Today is a historic day for all teachers who have finally seen one of their main goals achieved. We have reached an agreement. It was slow, but with a good goal,” said Pedro Barreiros, secretary general of the National Federation of Education (FNE).
The government has ensured that during the restoration process, teachers will be released from vacancies to move to 5th and 7th levels. However, the executive branch maintained the position that seniority restoration is only for career advancement and does not provide compensation for those about to retire.
“We have not given up on this demand,” said Pedro Barreiros.
AGREEMENT VALUE 300 MILLION EURO BY 2027
The Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Fernando Alexandre said that the return of 6 years, 6 months and 23 days will cost 300 million euros by 2027, in line with what is provided for in the government program, and in the first year will be about 40 million.
Fenprof wants more
Fenprof did not sign the agreement. He asked for an additional meeting to include teachers at the peak of their careers or those retiring.
