German authorities detained on Friday a young man suspected of planning a terrorist attack who was trying to apply for the position of security guard at Euro 2024.
According to the newspaper ImageThe Criminal Police Department of North Rhine-Westphalia confirmed that 23-year-old Soufian T., who has triple citizenship (German, Moroccan and Polish), applied to work as a security guard at side events of a football competition.
Authorities later discovered that the young man had also twice applied to compete in the Rock am Ring and the Nürburgring 24-hour race.
During the investigation, police learned that the suspected terrorist had already booked a flight from Cologne/Bonn Airport to Istanbul without a return ticket.
Federal criminal police were called in and further investigations were carried out into the suspect’s money flows and online activities. An investigation was launched into suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.
Based on the verification, the suspect was detained on Friday at Cologne-Bonn airport, where he was with his mother and sister. Several cell phones and 2,500 euros were confiscated from the man.
Sufiana T.’s mother stated that they wanted to make a pilgrimage to Mecca and presented tickets for a planned trip to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
According to Bild, German police believe (without providing hard evidence) that the suspect is linked to Daesh.
