Trump in Washington for the first time since the storming of the Capitol

Former US President and presumptive future Republican nominee Donald Trump returns to the capital Washington this Thursday to launch a charm operation against his party’s congressmen and senators ahead of the November 5 elections.

This is Trump’s first visit to the Capitol area since a mob of his supporters invaded the Congress building in January 2021 to prevent the ratification of the election victory of the current head of state, Democrat Joe Biden, Efe notes this Thursday-Friday. .

It is also Trump’s first meeting with lawmakers since he became the first former president to be convicted of a crime when a New York court found him guilty in May of falsifying business records to buy an actress’s silence.

Trump campaign sources told The Washington Post that the tycoon will meet with representatives and senators at a private Capitol Hill Republican club near Congress to “work together to advance policies that will save the United States.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, said representatives are “very pleased to have President Trump back.”

Outgoing Senate leader Mitch McConnell, who cut ties with Trump over the Capitol invasion, said he would attend the meeting and see the former president for the first time in more than three years.

McConnell has already confirmed that he will support Trump’s presidential candidacy, fulfilling his promise to support the party’s nominee.

Trump was accused of inciting the invasion of the Capitol and trying to overturn his election defeat. In recent years, he has expanded his control of the Republican Party and secured the nomination in the November 5 presidential election.

Efe also notes that only two of the 10 House Republicans who voted to prosecute Trump for the Capitol invasion retained their seats after the 2022 midterm elections.
