Banks issued consumer loans worth 707 million euros in April, the highest amount since March 2023, according to data published this Monday by the Bank of Portugal (BdP). This is an increase of more than 28% compared to the figures recorded in April 2023.
As intended, financing for the purchase of vehicles amounted to 275 million euros, an increase of 28.7% compared to April 2023. In this context, loans are allocated for the purchase of used cars, the total amount of which exceeds 211 million euros.
EUR 11.4 million in loans were provided for education, healthcare, renewable energy and equipment finance leasing, which is almost 10% more than in the same period last year.
However, the largest amount was for a personal loan without a specific purpose. Banks issued loans worth 301 million euros, an increase of more than 30% compared to April 2023, according to the institution headed by Mario Centeno.
Back in April, banks issued €119 million in credit cards, lines of credit and overdrafts, up 24% from the same month in 2023. In the case of overdrafts, only credit agreements with a maturity date are included. more than one month.
In total, 141,765 contracts were concluded in April with a focus on cards and overdrafts, of which almost 78 thousand contracts. According to the BdP, this number has decreased by almost 8% compared to March.
