Pedro Santana Lopes, President of the Figueira da Foz Chamber, expressed his regret for the tragedy of the fishing vessel Virgem Dolorosa, which killed 17 fishermen, most of whom were in Figueira da Foz. The trawler sank this Wednesday off the beaches of São Pedro do Moel and Vieira de Leiria, in Marinha Grande, 1,800 meters from the coast.
“They are in a state of shock,” said the mayor, who has so far visited three victims, including the ship’s captain, who Santana Lopes said was “very stunned.” The victims are residents of the towns of Leiros, Lavos and Buarcos.
In a conversation with journalists, the mayor emphasized that the causes of the incident are still unknown and that a municipal day of mourning will be declared.
