A Kremlin spokesman said Monday that there is no “magic wand” that could resolve the crisis in Ukraine overnight, as Donald Trump promised. During the White House campaign, the Republican candidate guaranteed that if elected, he would end the war within 24 hours.
“It is fantastic to imagine that the next US president will announce a suspension of military aid to Ukraine in his inauguration speech in Washington, calling for peace talks,” he said. In an interview with Pavel Zarubin, a reporter with privileged access to the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow has no preference for any candidate in the US presidential election on November 5.
“We don’t have a candidate. But, of course, the Democrats are more predictable. And what Putin said about Biden’s predictability applies to almost all Democrats, including Ms. Harris,” Peskov said, adding, however, that he does not see any prospects for improving relations with Washington, regardless of who wins the election.
The Russian president’s public stance on the US election has varied over time. In February, Putin praised Biden (still seeking re-election), praising his predictability, the type of experienced “old school” politician. Four months later, in June, he openly criticized the US judicial system, accusing it of hurting Donald Trump. As for aid to Kyiv, Peskov believed that the US had “exceeded acceptable limits.”
