China and Taiwan enter new dispute over funeral of Buddhist leader

On Sunday, China and Taiwan exchanged criticism after the island’s authorities prevented a Chinese delegation from attending the funeral of influential Buddhist teacher Xing Yun, who died on February 5.

State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesman, Chinese Executive Director Zhu Fenglian accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, its English abbreviation), which is currently in power in Taipei, of blocking the entry of a group invited by Fo. Guang Shan Buddhist order founded by Xing Yun.

The 38-member delegation, which was scheduled to arrive on the island on Saturday and stay until Tuesday, consisted of representatives from the Taiwan Affairs Administration, the China National Administration of Religious Affairs, the Chinese Buddhist Association and provincial representatives from east China’s Jiangsu Province. where Xing Yun was from.
