Guterres calls for immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan and says further escalation could be devastating

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday called on the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group to “stop hostilities immediately,” stressing that a further escalation of the conflict could have devastating consequences for the country.

“I strongly condemn the outbreak of hostilities taking place in Sudan and call on the leaders of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately end the fighting, restore calm and engage in dialogue to resolve the crisis,” the leader said. According to Guterres, the situation has already led to “terrible loss of life”, including many civilians, so any further escalation could have devastating consequences for the country and the region.
